The Global Plan of Action

and the Interlaken Declaration

The Global Plan of Action for Farm Animal Genetic Resources and the Interlaken Declaration ( GPA and the Interlaken Declaration) was adopted in Switzerland in 2007 by 109 countries.

The plan is based on the country reports from 169 countries, describing the status for each countries breeds and species for food and agriculture, in The State of the World's Farm Animal Genetic Resources (full version) or State of the World in brief .

The Global Plan of Action has four main goals that should be implemented in each countries policy:

  • Characterization and inventory of current genetic resources, and identification of risks and trends in the use of genetic resources.
  • Sustainable development and use of animal genetic resources.
  • Conservation of animal genetic resources
  • National policies, including developing competence, funding as well as other necessary infrastructure and institutional capacities.

All the Nordic countries recognize their commitments and have adopted the plan, and NordGen will contribute to the implementation by coordination the work between the Nordic countries and promoting the Nordic efforts and best practices.
