Sustainable biomass productionNordGen Forest, in cooperation with Danske Planteskoler and the Danish Nature Agency, organized Inspiration days in Odense, Denmark, 13-14 September 2011.
New possibilities for growing trees for bioenergy is on today’s agenda, both as a form of land use and as a means to meet the climatic challenge. Around 70 participants found their way to Odense to discuss this relevant topic. At the conference the potential for planting and growing forests, short-rotation crops and mixed crops was discussed. Different aspects of the value chain from tree breeding to forest nurseries, biomass producers, and finally to bioenergy as end product was illuminated. Nordic researchers and managers presented some current and future perspectives for bioenergy, among them the important question of sustainability. Is an increased harvesting of biomass for energy sustainable concerning CO2 emissions and possible effects on biodiversity? At the excursion possibilities for choosing species and provenances was shown at the Danish Nature Agency's property at Sønderskovgård, and short-rotation crops of willows were demonstrated and discussed.
