Molecular- and in vitro-laboratoryThe laboratory at the Nordic Genetic Resource Center applies DNA analyses and in vitro culture in the daily work of conservation and characterization of plant genetic resources. Tissue culture and molecular biology for gene bank applications need specific adaptations and must be developed for these purposes. This work is often done in collaboration with laboratories in the Nordic Network. The NordGen laboratory is a small unit that collaborates closely with the Plant Genetic Diversity Laboratory at The Swedish Agricultural University. All students with an interest in our field of work are invited to visit our project catalogue of ideas for doing thesis work or undertaking similar tasks. Marker analyses of diversityCurrently there are a number of projects carried out at the laboratory. We are collaborating with national programs and universities and are also involved in EU projects. In vitro storage
Education and trainingThe laboratory is involved in courses carried out at NordGen. The participants in these courses are international representatives working with plant genetic resources. The laboratory staff give lectures and provide demonstrations of laboratory methods and practical aspects in in vitro and DNA analyses. Responsible: Simon Jeppson

The Nordic Genetic Resource Center holds the in vitro
safety collection of a few of the vegetatively propagated Nordic crops. The material is stored at 4ºC in a climate chamber. The collection includes 86 different accessions of bulb onion (Allium cepa
var. solaninum
) and shallot (Allium cepa
var. ascalonicum
) from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The in vitro
collection also includes 7 different accessions of garlic (Allium sativum
) from Finland and Sweden. In vitro
preservation of horseradish (Armoracia rusticana
) has also been initiated.
