Question:
Effective population size
What is meant by Effective Population size?
Answer:
The term refers to how many unrelated males and females there is in a population contributing with their genes in one generation of breeding.
To avoid the negative effects of inbreeding this parameter should be at least Ne=50, 25 males and 25 females. But since the gender distribution normally is few males on many females the effective population size is much less than the actual number of animals in the breed or population.
