The Nordic countries' national conservation workAll the Nordic countries are responsible for managing their AnGR in a sustainable way. Councils for genetic resources, and national coordinators executes the national policies and obligations. NordGen coordinates the work and promotes a common Nordic policy.
The administrative agency (Genetic Resource Committee) in each country is responsible for the conservation and use of farm animal genetic resources, through their national coordinators. Emphasis is being placed on the value of sustainable breeding programs. Such breeding programs include broad breeding goals for health and fertility traits as well as general robustness and functionality. Focus on low inbreeding rates is also important. Bothe the conservation work of endangered and indigenous Nordic farm animal species, and the breeding work for the commercial farm animal populations, would benefit from such breeding goals. This work has been carried out in cooperation with national coordinators in Europe, through European Regional Focal Point (ERFP) and other countries throughout the world. The status of the formal bodies for genetic conservation varies somewhat between the different Nordic countries.
