Each country's workAll the Nordic countries are responsible for managing their animal genetic resources in a sustainable way. Councils for genetic resources and national coordinators institute the national policies and undertakings. NordGen coordinates the work and promotes a common Nordic policy.
The administrative agency (Genetic Resource Committee) in each Nordic country is responsible for the conservation and use of farm animal genetic resources, through their national coordinators. Emphasis is currently placed on the value of programmes of sustainable breeding, which include broad breeding goals for health and fertility traits as well as general robustness and functionality. Focus on low inbreeding rates is also important. Both conservation work of endangered and indigenous Nordic farm animal species and breeding for the commercial farm animal populations benefit from such breeding goals. This work has been carried out in cooperation with national coordinators in Europe, through the European Regional Focal Point (ERFP), and other countries throughout the world. The status of the formal bodies for genetic conservation varies somewhat among the Nordic countries.
