Norway spruce seed orchards – Swedish forestry´s golden nugget

The use of improved plant material is an effective way of increasing the forest production and the future forest harvest. In 2007, 48 percent of the produced spruce plants in Sweden originated from orchard seeds.

One of the reasons for the low use of orchard seeds is simply shortage of such seeds.

In the long term, the shortage will cease thanks to the ongoing establishment of new orchards. In the short term, the shortage can be counteracted by actions in the already productive orchards.
