With a interesting story and stunning pictures from the arctic seed bank for future food security to all mankind. View from the Seed Vault outside Longyearbyen in Svalbard Seed banks are not a new invention, seed banks and the task of storing seeds have been existing since the birth of agriculture. Obtaining enough food for mankind has always been a task for humanity and will be even more of a challenge as the population increase on our planet. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault will play a vital role for food security in the future. After five years we are proud to see that the Seed Vault serves as a secure safety net for one of the worlds most important natural resources; Plant diversity and food security.
Crop diversity is the biological base of all agriculture and a great foundation of the worlds food security! We need crop diversity to sustain and increase food production, to fight deseases and pests in agricultural crops and to be able to adapt to climate change. Today the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (SGSV) stores over 750 000 seedsamples from 53 Gene Banks all over the world! Example of crops that are well represented and stored for the future are Oryza sativa (rice), Triticum (wheat) and Sorghum (sorghum).
