On-going projects and working group related activities on NordGen CerealsNordic wheat screening for resistance against aggressive yellow rust strainsTests for resistance against two aggressive strains of yellow rust are carried out at Research Centre Flakkebjerg by Mogens Hovmøller. Wheat cultivars landraces and some lines of Mac Key special collection (323 accessions in total) are screened. Book on Cereals Nordic and global perspectiveProject on development of a popular book about cereals targeting general audience has been initiated. It will be written by Åsmund Björnstad with contribution by other Nordic cereal and cultural history experts. Assessment of duplications of Nordic material of barley and oats between NordGens and N.I. Vavilov Research Institute of Plant IndustryN.I. Vavilov Research Institute of Plant Industry in Russia (VIR) has a collection of Nordic accessions from the beginning of 20th century. These collections include also Nordic cereals. Comparison of potential duplications and identification of original accessions between NordGen and VIR collections is done for barley and oat material. Multiplication of material as well as field analysis (morphological traits to compare the potential duplicates between NordGen and Vavilov samples) is carried out in Russia Nordic barley screening for resistance against black stem rust ‘Uganda 99’Within the frame of the Global Rust Initiative (Gates foundation) for ‘Ug 99’ (aggressive form of black stem rust) screening tests for resistance to ‘Ug 99’ will be carried out by Brian Steffenson at University of Minnesota Department of Plant Pathology. A set of commonly grown Nordic barley cultivars (142 accessions) are included in his study. Nordic barleys screening for resistance against Fusarium head blightNordGen material (148 accessions) has been included in screening for Fusarium head blight resistance financed by USA security program.
