General policy on preservation of vegetative plant material in Iceland
The policy of Icelandic authorities in preservation of vegetative cultivars is in priniciple in line with the policy of NordGen. The main focus has been on the preservation of domestic plants but recently the preservation of Icelandic garden- and landscape plants of both local and imported origin has started.
The main groups of plants in clonal archive preservation in Iceland:
- Rhubarb archive.
- Fruit and berries archive, mainly Ribes, Rubus and Fragaria
- Garden- and landscape plants archive.
- Rose archive.
The Agricultural University of Iceland (AUI) has been the main partner in coordinating, collecting and establishing three of the four clonal archives in Iceland, the rhubarb archive, the fruit and berries archive and the garden- and landscape archive.
Management and responsibility for clonal archives:
- The Rhubarb archive is kept by the Botanical Garden of ReykjavÃk city.
- The Fruit and berries archive is kept by a local gardener at Kristnes in Eyjafjörður, in cooperation with AUI. This clone archive has only recently been established and is still in the making.
- The Garden- and landscape plants archive is kept and maintained of the AUI. Other smaller local archives will be established in cooperation with AUI and local municipals and others. This clone archive has also just been established.
- The Rose archive is kept by the Rose club of the Horticultural society of Iceland in cooperation with local municipals and AUI. This clone archive has recently been established and is still in the making.
