Field trial and collections in Iceland

Collecting trip
NordGen has been on a collection trip to Iceland with focus on angelica (Angelica archangelica L.) and caraway (Carum carvi L.). During two days five new accessions of angelica and two caraway accessions were collected. In addition accessions of other MAP species were collected.

Field trial of caraway
NordGen has in collaboration with the distiller company Pernod Ricard Nordic and Reykjavik Botanical Garden a field trial of various caraway accessions. In all 11 different populations of caraway are included in the trial, ranging from commercial cultivars to semi-wild and wild populations. The accessions are of Polish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic origin. The same accessions are grown in a similar field trial in the Experimental fields in Alnarp in the South of Sweden. After harvest, seeds will be investigated for their content of volatile oils, with special focus on production of aquavits and differences will be assessed with respect to origin and growth location.

The picture illustrates the variation in growth forms among caraway populations grown in Reykjavik Botanical Garden. Generally, populations of northern origin had a more prostrate growth habit than the cultivars. The picture was taken in September, in the seeding year. Photo Magnus Göransson
