Organisation

NordGen is an institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers, working as a gene bank and knowledge center to promote sustainable use and conservation of genetic resources within plants, farm animals and forestry. We are more than 30 highly qualified employees from all the Nordic countries.

NordGen is organized under the Nordic Council of Ministers for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Agriculture, Food and Forestry (MR-FJLS).

The Nordic cooperation

The Nordic Council of Ministers is the official body for inter-governmental co-operation in the Nordic Region. It seeks Nordic solutions wherever and whenever the countries can achieve more together than by working on their own.

A figure that describes the organisation of the Nordic Council of Ministers

Every year, the Nordic Council of Ministers defines the operational objectives and the budget of NordGen. These objectives also reflect NordGen’s role in implementing the Nordic cooperation program for fisheries and aquaculture, agriculture, food and forestry.

The Nordic countries are also involved in NordGen’s work through representation in the Council for Farm Animal Genetic Resources, the Council for Forest Rejuvenation, the Forest Genetic Resources Working Group and NordGen Plants’ various working groups.

History

The establishment of NordGen was passed by the Nordic Council of Ministers on 5 September 2007. However, NordGen is built on more than 40 years of Nordic collaboration as NordGen took over a range of tasks that had previously been assigned to the three separate Nordic institutions; Nordic Genebank, Nordic Genebank Farm Animals and the Nordic Council for Forest Reproductive Material.
