Seed and Potato Requests

Close-up down in brown paper pouches filled with peas. The best way to preserve genetic diversity is to use it. The Nordic seed collection is no exception. Therefore, NordGen sends out about 10.000 seed samples annually to scientists, plant breeders, companies, museums, botanical gardens and home gardeners with an interest in old cultural plants. In the text below you can learn more about how to order seeds or potatoes from us.

Seed orders are distinguished between orders for scientific purposes and orders from private users (NordGen’s shop). Potato requests are sent directly to our Senior Scientist responsible for potatoes.

Seed Orders for Scientific Purposes

The entire Nordic seed collection of about 33.000 seed samples is available for scientific purposes by ordering through our data management system GENBIS. By registering as a user you can search and order the accessions that are relevant to your purpose.

Scientific purposes include researchers, plant breeders, botanical gardens, museums and others who request seeds or potatoes from NordGen’s collection in their professional role. These orders can be made all year round.

Delivery time for seed material orders for scientific purposes varies depending on the workload we have in our seed laboratory, and delivery time can be expected to be up to four weeks. A Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA) have to be accepted and confirmed by the requester before seed material is delivered.

Order Seeds for Scientific Purposes

Hobby Growers

Once a year, hobby growers and home gardeners with an interest in older varieties of vegetables, flowers and cereals can order seed samples and mini tubers of potatoes from NordGen. Every year from March 1st to May 31st, we sell our surplus of seeds for a small admin fee.

By ordering seeds from us, you not only help to preserve an important part of our Nordic cultural heritage but also make an important contribution to biodiversity. Since NordGen is not a commercial seed company, the seeds are sold in a limited amount and restrictions apply to how you can use the seeds you ordered. We hope for your understanding.

Potato requests

Every year NordGen also produces mini tubers of the Nordic potato varieties. They can be ordered by plant breeders, researchers, museums and other professional users from 1 February each year. Orders are done by mail to Pawel Chrominski, see contact details below. Hobby growers and home gardeners can order potatoes in NordGens webshop that is open from March 1st to May 31st.

In vitro material of potatoes is distributed year-round but before distribution, we often need to propagate the material. So please consider that it might take up to three months to send your order in some cases.

Potatoes delivered from NordGen are virus-free and produced in accordance with EU plant health regulations. Before the order can be made, the user needs to sign and submit an agreement that regulates how the material may be used. Unfortunately, due to current regulations, it is not possible for us to distribute potatoes to Norway.

A few varieties of our potatoes are also sold as mini tubers in NordGen’s shop each year, starting the 1st of March.
