Working group industrial crops

The working group focuses on agricultural crops other than cereals and forages. It is a wide mandate comprising for example root-, oil- and fibre crops. Most of the accessions in the collection are cultivars (74% of the accessions accepted for long term storage) but the collection also includes research material, landraces and samples from wild or semi-wild populations. The collection contains more than 1500 accessions from 30 different species.

Due to the wide range of different crops and species in this working group, we have chosen to focus the work on one crop/species type at the time.

Starting 2014 the focus will be on protein crops and an ad hoc group for grain legumes has been created. The working group consists of experts from the Nordic countries and meets regularly to share information among the countries, discuss the collection and to plan common projects.

The working group focuses their efforts on:

  • Analysis of the existing collections and supplementary collections to cover the diversity in the Nordic region.
  • Continued characterisation and evaluation of the collections to promote use of the material
  • Establishing inventories of formerly cultivated Nordic material and subsequently to aim at acquiring some of the more outstanding material through repatriation from other gene banks or other sources.
